Vietnam will be the main pepper supplier to the EU until September 2024

Harsh weather conditions and drought caused by El Niño in pepper-growing regions in the states of Espírito Santo and Bahia will negatively impact the upcoming harvest season from April to June. Due to drought in Brazil and a reduction in pepper cultivation area in Indonesia in recent years, Vietnam will be the main pepper supplier to the EU until September.


Kinhtedothi - Pepper prices today, May 1st, range from 97,500 to 98,500 Vietnamese dong per kilogram. April 2024 marked the end of the harvest season in Vietnam, but pepper prices continue to rise, signaling a positive market trend. Concerns about supply shortages and hoarding, as well as speculation, are reasons behind the price hike this month.


In Dak Lak province, pepper is purchased today at 98,500 Vietnamese dong per kilogram, an increase of 500 dong per kilogram.

In Dak Nong province, pepper is purchased today at 97,500 Vietnamese dong per kilogram, also an increase of 500 dong per kilogram.

In Gia Lai province, pepper is priced at 97,500 Vietnamese dong per kilogram.

Meanwhile, in Dong Nai province, pepper is priced at 97,500 Vietnamese dong per kilogram.

In Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, pepper is priced at 98,000 Vietnamese dong per kilogram.

And in Binh Phuoc province, pepper is purchased today at 98,500 Vietnamese dong per kilogram, an increase of 500 dong per kilogram.

Pepper prices have increased by 500 dong per kilogram in some localities compared to the same time yesterday.

Summing up April 2024, pepper prices increased by an average of 5,000 dong per kilogram in low-price areas such as Gia Lai and Dong Nai provinces; a 3,500 dong per kilogram increase was observed in other regions. Price gaps between regions have narrowed.


At the close of the latest trading session, the International Pepper Community (IPC) listed the price of black pepper from Lampung, Indonesia, at $4,703 per ton, a decrease of 0.17%; Brazilian black pepper ASTA 570 at $4,700 per ton, an increase of 1.06%; and Kuching, Malaysia, maintaining its ASTA black pepper price at $4,900 per ton.

The price of Muntok white pepper was $6,232 per ton, a decrease of 0.16%; while Malaysian ASTA white pepper remained at $7,300 per ton.

Vietnamese black pepper traded at $4,200 per ton for 500 g/l quality, and $4,300 per ton for 550 g/l quality; white pepper was priced at $6,000 per ton. IPC adjusted Indonesian pepper prices downward while still increasing prices for Brazil.

The agency noted that last week's market showed mixed reactions, with only Sri Lankan domestic pepper prices recording a decline.

Specifically, in South Asia, both domestic and international pepper prices in India have increased since last week. Sri Lanka's domestic pepper prices have continued to decline over the past two weeks.

In Southeast Asia, domestic and export pepper prices in Indonesia remain stable. Domestic pepper prices in Malaysia have increased in the past week, while export prices remain stable and unchanged.

Additionally, Brazilian black pepper prices, Cambodian black pepper prices, and Chinese white pepper prices remained stable this week.
